Walk Between Wineries: The Turtle Creek Trail Connects Grassy Creek to Adagio
Walk Between Wineries: The Turtle Creek Trail Connects Grassy Creek to Adagio
As of January 2026, you can walk between two Yadkin Valley wineries without touching a car. The Turtle Creek Trail, part of Segment 6 of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, runs 2.55 miles one way between Grassy Creek Vineyard and Adagio Vineyards. It is maintained by the Elkin Valley Trails Association (EVTA), and it is the only trail in North Carolina wine country that connects two working wineries on foot.
I have been watching this region long enough to know when something genuinely changes the way people can experience it. This trail does that. The drive between these two wineries takes maybe ten minutes. The walk takes closer to an hour, and it is a completely different experience.
What You Need to Know Before You Go
The trail runs 5.1 miles round trip, 2.55 miles each direction, through woodlands along Turtle Creek. EVTA rates it moderate, with some elevation change along the way. It is not a punishing hike, but it is not a flat sidewalk either. Wear real shoes. Bring water, at least 20 ounces per person. The trail can get muddy after rain, and cell service is spotty in stretches, so set up any shuttle or rideshare arrangements before you start walking.
The trail is linear, which means you either hike back the way you came or arrange a pickup at the far end. Both options work. Just plan for it ahead of time rather than figuring it out when you are standing in a field with a low battery.
Dogs are welcome on the trail on leash. Grassy Creek is dog-friendly on the patio. Confirm Adagio's current policy before you arrive with one.
The Two Wineries
Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery sits on historic Klondike Farm in State Road. It is a sprawling property with its own hiking trails, a lake, and restored log cabin rentals through Klondike Cabins. The vibe is rustic and unhurried. Families, groups, anyone who wants to spend half a day outdoors before or after a tasting fits here naturally. Signature wines include their Chardonnay, Barbera, and Perfect Pear. You can learn more at grassycreekvineyard.com.
Adagio Vineyards is a boutique winery in Elkin, and the contrast with Grassy Creek is part of what makes this trail interesting. Named after the musical term for slow, Adagio is intimate and focused. They host monthly violin concerts from September through May. The wine program leans toward Petit Verdot and dry whites. It is a good place to slow down and pay attention. See adagiovineyards.com for current hours and concert dates.
Both wineries are walk-in friendly for individuals and small groups. For parties of six or more, call ahead at either location. Adagio's violin concerts fill up, so book those in advance if the schedule lines up with your visit.
How to Build Your Day
Most people do better starting at Grassy Creek, exploring the grounds first, then hiking toward Adagio. That way you arrive at a smaller, quieter tasting room after the walk rather than before it. You can reverse the order if your schedule calls for it; the trail works both directions.
Build in more time than you think you need. The walk itself is roughly an hour each way at a comfortable pace, but between exploring Grassy Creek's property, sitting at Adagio for a proper tasting, and hiking back, this is realistically a full morning into early afternoon. It is not a quick stop.
For families: this works well for older kids who can handle five miles of trail with some elevation. For younger kids, skip the hike and drive between the two. Grassy Creek has enough on the property to keep kids occupied without the trail.
Common Questions
Is the Turtle Creek Trail the only hike-between-wineries trail in North Carolina? Yes, as far as I know. There is nothing else in the state that connects two wineries on a dedicated hiking path.
Do I need reservations? Not for standard tastings at either winery. Adagio's violin concerts require advance booking. Groups of six or more should call ahead anywhere.
What about lodging? Grassy Creek's Klondike Cabins are on-site. Our full lodging guide covers more options in the area.
